TITLE: Gleaning Coordinator

SUPERVISOR: Spokane Edible Tree Project Board President

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Gleaning Coordinator is responsible for managing Spokane Edible Tree Project’s (SETP) fresh produce projects, which work to reduce food waste and bring more fresh produce into existing food distribution programs serving low-income populations throughout Spokane County. The position works closely with the SETP board of directors, and primarily involves communicating with partners and volunteers and coordinating logistics of transportation, storage, and gleaning events. This position runs seasonally from June 1st through November. The hourly wage is $15 an hour for 20 hours each week.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Gleaning

o Build and maintain relationships with fruit tree owners (both commercial and residential), volunteers, and community partners throughout the season.

o Do site visits with private tree owners to ensure a high quality of fruit (specifically no pests).

o Schedule harvest events and coordinate volunteers for gleans during summer and fall harvest season.

o Host gleans, including supervising volunteers, educating volunteers on proper picking techniques for specific fruit varieties, ladder safety, and transportation of gleaned crop to donation or storage site

o Host consistent gleans Thursday evening 4-8 pm and Saturday morning 8-11 am. As well as 2 consistent days of office hours. Flexible schedule for the other hours.

o Manage farmers market gleaning program.

o Maintain accurate records of season activities in SETP’s Google Drive.

Outreach and communication

o Update and maintain the SETP presence on social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, email newsletters, and website.

o Respond to phone, email and social media messages; open and sort paper mail.

o Schedule tabling at local events and presentations to local groups.

o Assist the Event Committee with fundraising events.

o Help with development of Annual Report including seasonal statistics and personal interest stories.

 Resource development

o Research, identify and gather vetted educational materials on orchard tree planting, pruning, pest management and harvesting, as potential content for the SETP website, social media, and fliers.

o Host fruit processing workshops or create content for social media about processing fruit (i.e. baking, jam making, and canning).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

General interest in the non-profit and social service field.

Comfortable working and communicating effectively with groups of diverse people.

Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.

Ability to work independently and with a team, including leading and supervising volunteers.

Self-motivated and flexible.

Competence using Microsoft Office programs, web-based databases and newsletters, and social media sites.

Agricultural experience or fruit tree care a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physically able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs. (with or without assistance).

This position includes extended periods of standing, walking on uneven surfaces, bending, climbing ladders, lifting boxes, and picking fruit and vegetable crops. Candidates must be physically capable of these activities.

Clean driving record and comfortable driving an automatic pick-up truck.
